klub katarakt Festival
18 - 21 January 2012
Kampnagel Hamburg
step out of time
Can one tell that is to say, narrate time, time itself, as such, for its own sake? Certainly not,
it would be a foolish venture. A story telling: Time goes by, it passes, time flows and so on is,
in no healthy sense, a narration. It would be like someone holding the same tone or chord insanely
for one hour and calling this music.
(Thomas Mann, The Magic Mountain)
Consciousness of time as well as our personal musical time-perception has drastically changed since the beginning of the
20th century, taking into account the extreme lengths in works of Morton Feldmann, Steve Reich or La Monte Young.
klub katarakt presents in 2012 compositions that lead in different manners away from time and open the question of the
beginning and the ending of a musical experience leading the audience thus towards limits in which an intuitive approach
should be dared rather than a logical one, the experience rather than the understanding.
Festival Overview
» current program
MUSICIRCUS 100
Wed, 18.1.2012 19:30 Conzert installation with various works by John Cage - Nelly Boyd & guests 21:30 Pop abstraction - Halma (HH), Tellavision (HH) 15 Euro (red. 8,- Euro)
The opening of the festival is dedicated to John Cage, who this year would have celebrated his 100th birthday.
The Hamburg-based ensemble Nelly Boyd and various guest stars (including Frauke Aulbert and Matthias Kaul from the
Ensemble l'art pour l'art) present MUSICIRCUS, in which several compositions of Cage will be performed, distributed in
three halls - overlapping or simultaneously.
The late concert puts the festival's theme into a pop-music context: Tellavision, the one-woman project between loops and
lo-fi shows us in its atmospheric vividness the "sub-surface to surface" while the band Halma markes out milestones in wide
open spaces with their music: travelling as a state of being.
TRIP WITHOUT QUESTIONS
Thu, 19.1.2012
19:00 Morton Feldman: For Philip Guston (1984) - Trio Nexus (Berlin) 15 Euro (red. 8,- Euro)
The second day of the festival day features in contrast to the opening only one single work on the program. klub katarakt
presents the Hamburg premiere of one of Morton Feldmans most impressive compositions: For Philip Guston takes the
audience through its 4,5 hours length to a new dimension of time and space perception, or as Feldmann described it before
a performance in Middelburg, on this trip, during which Ill ask no questions. At the same time the piece is a reminiscence
to Feldmans friend and companion John Cage with its starting motive: C G A(b) E(b).
SUSPENSION DU TEMPS
Fri, 20.1.2012 18:00 Panel discussion with Eliane Radigue (Paris) 19:30 Eliane Radigue: Naldjorlak IIII (200508) - Charles Curtis (cello), Carol Robinson, Bruno Martinez (basset horn) 15 Euro (red. 8,- Euro)
Eliane Radigue is the focus of the festivals third day.
Radigue studied with the founders of Musique Concrète Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry and was held as a pioneer in
electronic music for decades. For some years now, she has focused exclusively on purely acoustic music. At the center of
this output is Naldjorlak, a three-part work composed for and performed by Charles Curtis, Carol Robinson, and Bruno Martinez
and having now its Hamburg premiere. Naldjorlak explores a subtle sound world fashioned from breath, pulsation, beating,
murmurs and radiant harmonics. The suspension of time, the dialog with eternity, the proximity to silence, an appeal to
contemplation, and exceptional concentration... with Naldjorlak Radigue is coming ever closer to the impalpable chimerical
music of her dreams.
Eliane Radigue, who celebrates her 80th birthday a week after the festival, and the musicians will be speaking about her work
in a panel discussion before the concert.
